Yorkshire, 1898. A grieving woman and her son move back to the unoccupied house of her ex husband, recently found dead, but they discover that they are not alone inside the house.
Grace’s estranged husband James suddenly dies, leaving her the sole parent of their son Charlie – and the deed to his Yorkshire estate. With James gone and no other funds, Grace and Charlie are forced to move to the country estate, where they both struggle to adapt to the new lifestyle. At first, Grace doesn’t take much notice when Charlie mentions he has a new friend who lives in the basement. However, as the boy spends more and more time in the dark, cold space under the house, Grace’s concern beings to turn to fear... and after a visit from her family-in-law ends in tragedy, Grace is forced to consider the worst. Maybe James’ death was not a suicide. Maybe she and Charlie are not alone. Maybe something else is living in the house...
